The 3,500-Year-Old Hittite Linen Fabric Discovered 30 Years Ago is Being Exhibited for the First Time
The 3500-year-old Hittite linen fabric, unearthed during archaeological excavations at the Şapinuva archaeological site in Çorum’s Ortaköy district in 1995, has been exhibited for the first time at the Çorum Museum. This rare find provides significant information about the Hittites’ textile technology and cultural heritage.
This priceless piece of fabric, found during excavations led by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Süel and Prof. Dr. Aygül Süel, is a rare example in archaeological excavations in Türkiye. As a result of detailed examinations at Middle East Technical University and Ankara University, it was confirmed that the fabric was made of linen dating back to the 14th century BC. This historical artifact, which has been carefully preserved in the depot of the Çorum Museum for years, has finally come to light.

The 3×3 centimeter piece of fabric, attached to a pottery fragment measuring approximately 24×20 centimeters, was introduced at a special launch organized by the Çorum Business Women’s Association (İŞKAD). Çorum Governor Ali Çalgan emphasized that this important discovery has been meticulously preserved for 30 years and presented to the public for the first time, saying, “This 3500-year-old artifact will make a great contribution to the promotion of both our city and our country. It is a great source of pride for us that the Hittite civilization was able to produce such advanced products.”

Prof. Dr. Aygül Süel, the excavation director of the period, said, “This piece of linen, woven approximately 4000 years ago, was found by chance. It was preserved in an airless environment and reached us. Thanks to the meticulous work of Mustafa Hodja and our team, we unearthed this valuable artifact. I am very happy to hold this launch here today.”
The 3500-year-old linen fragment reveals the advanced textile techniques and craftsmanship of the Hittites. The durability and processing of linen gives important clues about the economic and cultural structure of the Hittite society.
