
The Medusa Mosaic in the Ancient City of Kibyra, which was covered during the winter months, was opened to visitors
The historical Kibyra Ancient City in Gölhisar district of Burdur started to welcome its visitors again with the Medusa mosaic, which was taken under protection during the winter months. This unique work, which has a history of about 2000 years, is considered one of the important art examples of the ancient period.
The mosaic in Kibyra, 108 kilometres away from the centre of Burdur, is made of coloured marbles with the ‘Opus Sectile’ technique and is located in the middle of the odeon, which served as a concert hall, assembly, court and theatre in ancient times. The mosaic, which was covered by expert restorers in order to protect it from adverse weather conditions during the winter months, is now offered to visitors.

Kibyra Ancient City Excavation Head and Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Archaeology Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Özüdoğru announced on his social media account that the Medusa mosaic can be visited until the end of November 2025. This mosaic, in which Medusa is depicted with her eyes, which are believed to turn malicious people into stone in mythology, draws attention with its unique features in the world.
The ancient city of Kibyra continues to attract the attention of local and foreign tourists with its historical and cultural richness. Medusa mosaic stands out as one of the most important artefacts that attract the attention of visitors in the ancient city.

Kibyra was an important centre for blacksmithing, leatherworking, pottery and horse breeding in ancient times. The city has witnessed the interaction of different cultures and has a rich cultural heritage.

The artefacts excavated from Kibyra are exhibited in the Burdur Museum.
In 2016, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
