A 2300-year-old inscription was found on the Bozburun Peninsula, known as “Carian Khersonesos” or “Rhodes Peraias” in ancient times. This inscription proves that Bozburun was an important trade center during the Hellenistic period.
Bozburun Peninsula is located in the Bodrum district of the Mugla province in southwestern Türkiye.
The inscription, called Kalatepe inscription, was discovered by Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty Member and Head of Archaeological Survey Dr. Volkan Demirciler and his team.
According to the statement made by Dr. Volkan Demirciler, the inscription has not been the subject of scientific publication before.
The inscription, which was found as a result of the studies carried out on the Kaletepe ridges, is about the financial contributions of 8 people from different cities of Anatolia for an as yet undetermined purpose.
The inscriptions found on the Bozburun Peninsula, known as the Carian Khersonesos or Rhodes Peraias, are considered rare finds that provide information about many unknown aspects of the region, including political and socioeconomic conditions.
According to the news in Türkiye’s news agency Anadolu Agency, Dr. Volkan Demirciler and his team, within the scope of the archaeological surveys they have been conducting throughout the Bozburun Peninsula since 2021, are meticulously examining all archaeological data that offer settlement patterns, ancient agricultural terraces, hydrological potential and settlement-agriculture relations, tracing and documenting new sites, as well as making an archaeological inventory of the region.
It is stated that the Bozburun Peninsula is a region where villages came together at least 2,300 years ago and were organized on a city scale.
