Karahantepe to Welcome Visitors in 2025
Rising in the mystical atmosphere of Şanlıurfa, in the shadow of Göbekli Tepe, Karahantepe draws attention as an important archaeological site that unlocks the secrets of the Neolithic Age. The impressive artifacts unearthed since the excavations began in 2019 transform Karahantepe from just an archaeological site into a time journey that sheds light on human history.
Contemporary with Göbekli Tepe, Karahantepe fascinates its visitors with its unique architecture and mysterious atmosphere. The T-shaped obelisks, human and animal figures revealed in the excavations offer important clues about the beliefs and lifestyle of the Neolithic Age. Especially unique finds such as pit-based structures carved into the bedrock and a human statue carrying a leopard on its back place Karahantepe in a special position in the world of archaeology.

The increasing popularity of Karahantepe and visitor interest also increase the region’s tourism potential. However, the meticulous work carried out to protect the sensitive archaeological site and ensure visitor safety will be completed in 2025. According to the statements of Prof. Dr. Necmi Karul, Head of Göbekli Tepe and Karahantepe excavations, approximately 30% of the 800,000 people who visited Göbekli Tepe last year also wanted to see Karahantepe. In the face of this intense interest, it is of great importance to build facilities that will meet the safety and needs of visitors.
Karul states, “We do not turn away those who come, but we plan that we will have a safer, systematic tour route by the end of the year,” and states that studies such as arranging walking paths, placing information panels, and covering the excavation area with a roof are ongoing so that visitors can visit the area more safely and regularly.
Karahantepe is part of the “Taş Tepeler Project” together with Göbekli Tepe. This project aims to reveal the Neolithic Age settlements in Şanlıurfa and its surroundings and to reveal the importance of the region in the prehistoric period. With the opening of Karahantepe to visitors, the tourism potential of the Taş Tepeler Project is expected to increase further.
