Mysterious Discovery in the Depths of Lake Van: Ancient Tower and Wall Remains Unearthed
Lake Van, Türkiye’s largest lake, continues to reveal its secrets. Led by Underwater Image Director Tahsin Ceylan, a team of divers discovered the remains of an ancient tower and wall at a depth of 15 meters off the coast of Akdamar Island. This discovery sheds light on the thousands of years of history of Lake Van.
Historical Remains and Amphora Fragments
During the dive, the team also found fragments of amphora (ancient jugs) on the ancient wall, indicating that the area was once an important settlement. Tahsin Ceylan stated, “If we consider that the structure, which is in an intact state, was above water in the past, we can conclude that Lake Van has risen by 15-20 meters over many years.”

Impressive Images Even in Harsh Winter Conditions
Despite the harsh winter conditions, the dives showcased the unique beauty of Lake Van. Images taken from under the ice layer formed in the coastal areas further enhanced the lake’s mysterious atmosphere.

The Secrets of Lake Van Continue to Unravel
Tahsin Ceylan, who led the diving team, recalled that they had previously captured images of microbialites, castle ruins, and some structural groups in the depths of Lake Van, saying, “We will continue to unravel the secrets of Lake Van.”
This discovery demonstrates that Lake Van has significant potential not only with its natural beauty but also with its historical richness. The uncovering of the ancient tower and wall remains increases the region’s tourism potential and paves the way for new research into the history of Lake Van.
