2000-year-old statues of Zeus and Aphrodite found in Aspendos Ancient City

2000-year-old statues of Zeus and Aphrodite from the Roman period were found during excavations in the ancient city of Aspendos.

Aspendos is located in the Serik district of Antalya. Aspendos, which has a history dating back to the 10th century BC, was one of the most important cities of the Pamphylia Region. The city was founded on the banks of the Köprüçay River, about 8 km from the sea.

2000-year-old statues found in the ancient city of Aspendos

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the discovery of the statues on his social media account X.

Ersoy announced on account X with the following message that two statues from the Roman Imperial Period were found in the excavations carried out within the scope of the Heritage to the Future Project.

“We are working to leave a legacy for the future. Two magnificent statues from the Roman Empire Period were discovered during the excavations carried out in the Ancient City of Aspendos within the scope of our Heritage to the Future Project. The 2000-year-old fascinating elegant depictions of Zeus and Aphrodite were unearthed during the excavations carried out in the Two-storey Shops-Stoa Complex. I wish that the artifacts and structures we will bring back to life will be beneficial for the cultural and tourism life of our country.”
